Water Reclamation District (FRWRD) has over a 100-year history that has demonstrated a local commitment to water quality in the Greater Elgin area, and the Fox River. FRWRD was formed under the name Sanitary District of Elgin on May 26, 1922. This was the result of significant foresight and leadership from the Elgin business community and local business leaders such as: E. N. Herbster, C.F. Becker and M.M. Cloudman, the District's first Board of Trustees.

The Sanitary District of Elgin was the sixth Sanitary District formed und the State of Illinois Sanitary District Act of 1917 and represented a service area population of over 28,000 residents. Currently we serve approximately 200,000 customers in six local communities and portions of unincorporated Kane County.

Our District provides service to residents within the communities of Elgin, South Elgin, West Dundee, and portions of Sleepy Hollow, Streamwood, Hoffman Estates, unincorporated St. Charles Township, and surrounding areas in Kane and Cook Counties. FRWRD assists the communities of Streamwood and Hoffman Estates through an intergovernmental agreement with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD). Service is also provided to a portion of West Dundee through a contract agreement.

Our three-award winning wastewater treatment plants are staffed 24 hours a day with highly qualified and dedicated employees that are continuously seeking opportunities to learn and grow. After 100 years of continuous growth and improvements, the Fox River Water Reclamation District is poised to continue to provide the leadership demonstrated in 1922 by the original Board of Trustees for the next 100 years and beyond.
