The Industrial Pretreatment Department of FRWRD
has the responsibility of protecting the wastewater collection
system, the treatment plants, and the environment from the
damage that could occur when industries that use hazardous
or toxic materials discharge wastes into the sewer system.
This protection is achieved by regulating industrial or non-domestic
dischargers that have the potential to discharge toxic
wastes, or unusually strong conventional wastes into the collection
system. This is accomplished by permitting, inspecting and
sampling non-domestic dischargers, with a special emphasis
upon those industries that have the greatest potential to cause
problems with the treatment operations.
The effectiveness of the Pretreatment Program is best demonstrated
by the quality of discharge industry now provides. The heavy
metal content of industrial sewage has dropped by over 90%
since the beginning of pretreatment. As a result, industrial
dischargers, when taken as a whole, has the same level of pollutants
as residential-only areas.
The FRWRD Industrial Pretreatment Department personnel also
prevent illegal discharges into storm sewers, which discharge
directly into the Fox River, without treatment.
